KLRT Dominates Coach Death Story
Alot of Little Rock viewers have e-mailed in about how KLRT seemed to own the Tulsa Drillers Coach Death story. The e-mailers say KLRT had exclusive pictures from the field moments after the accident, and were the first station to confirm the death. They were also the onlystation to talk to a player the night of the accident. ALSO CNN picked up the pictures from KLRT. Isn't that strange, a FOX affiliate supplying news to CNN.

HEELLLLLO? Their newscast is at 9....everyone else is at 10...that's why they had it first, DUH. Let's go back to the web shall we? KTHV had pictures of it as well as having video of the guy the day before he died. I'm sick of FOX tooting their horn. The only thing KLRT dominates is Arkansas's ONLY newscast at 9. Nice job guys, can we get some more light on those live shots?

If it was CNN, Fox News, Headline News & ESPN would be using content from all 4 market affiliates. They are not. Not for this story anyway.

A Fox statin sharig with CNN is not that strange. I'm sure KLRT pays for the CNN feed. How else can they fill an hour. Part of the agreement with CNN is yiou give them any story they want as soon as they want it. They will embargo it in your market.
Like CNN cares who it's coming from. They use everyone like pawns. KLRT is just check mate that's all.
Thats right, lets start comparing the KLRT news cast to others in the market once they get some props. Some of you people are pitifully insecure.
Hating KLRT has NOTHING to do with this story.
It's because he doesn't have a third leg like the chicken does.
It matters little who got this story and when. It really doesn't. A fine gentleman is killed tragically before a lot of people at Dickey-Stephens Park. He leaves a pregnant wife and two children. He's the first death at a pro baseball game since 1929, and only the second in history.
Could we have some perspective please? That is if any of you gomers still possess the capacity for perspective.

KLRT-DT will lead the LR market in post-analog television in 2009. They have the "heads up" on the technical end and that will make all the difference. Plus, FOX has more broadcast money to spend than all the other stations combined.

I thought KLRT's coverage was good, but so was THV's - Mark Edwards was live. I noticed KATV had Dale out there too. By the way, what's with someone's obsession on this board with David Raath (he's a sports guy for goodness sakes)? You love ripping on the guy for no reason. Real classy.
As someone who works at KLRT, I'm proud of our coverage. Just to let all you haters know, this whole subject was started by e-mails sent to the blogger, not by us.
Also, I too don't quite understand what 10:13's deal is with Raath. All though I have a feeling I know who it is.

I was disappointed in KATV's coverage. Instead of Sully reporting on what really mattered -- the accident... His story bagan and carried on like nothing had happened. He even showed video of Bill Valentine singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame. Seriously. No one cares about Billy V when there is a coach who (at that time) had been seriously injured.
What's with all this attention Raath (or is it Rath)is getting? I'm pretty positive he wouldn't post on here. I've seen him in action. He's a church going guy, not much on dishing = boring.

CNN gets video from lots of stations... they aren't affiliate based. So no, it's not odd they'd get it from a FOX affil.
Good job to KLRT though. I just hope the pictures from the scene were handled with class.

WOW! I'm glad to see the maturity once again. A women is now a widow, pregnant, left alone with two young boys. I doubt she cares who BROKE the story. Please people think before you rip people apart. There is a family that is grieving and all you care about is who did or who did not get the story first.
Not to mention all the families that had to explain the tragic events to their little ones...GET A LIFE!

FOX16 had a crew at the park and the only other station to have a clue was KARK..Aaron even came up to our crew and told us they would not have know about it had they not seen our news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The immaturity level here is outrageous. True professionalism is being able to say that someone else has done something well, give the credit and move on. Attacking just because you think a station is not-worthy somehow because they are new or on at 9pm is ridiculous. Grow up and try to continue improving your own product, rather than constantly bashing the product of competitors.
How many of you actually watched the different stations' 10:00 newscasts Sunday night?
I believe ALL the stations (for sure KTHV and KATV) reported the score of the Travs game AND reported the fact that the game was called in the ninth because a Tulsa base coach was hit with a line-drive. One sports anchor called the event "tragic" without saying why and another reported that the coach was "unconscious" and rushed to a hospital.
The only reason KLRT had the pics was because one of their reporters was at the game (off the clock) and snapped some shots with his cell phone. No station had a camera there because it happened after each station had finished shooting highlights and were editing them for the nightly news.
I'm not hating on KLRT...they DID own the story and posted the coach's death online in the wee hours of the morning as soon as it was confirmed. They had a staffer in the right place at a tragic time. Every station has had it happen.
Fox 16 may have been there because their news runs one hour early but they do not have babes like the KATV modeling agency!!!

Stations report all the roberies, muggings, shootings, and car wrecks because it is easy to do. Just listen to the scanner, then chase the po po cars to the scene of the trajedy. Fact. Gathering good news takes work, somethng that the stations don't want to do if not necessary.

That is absolutely not true. Most reporters / producers / etc. WANT to do more than that, but stupid ass consultants tell TV stations that "crime sells", and News Directors listen to them more than they do the viewer.

Get with the digital age, dude/dudette. If you dont' think KLRT Channel 30 is, and has been, leading the digital signal market then you need to be able to receive their digital channel and compare it to the rest. No comparison. Are you still stuck in the analog age?

Sorry I haven't posted yet, but the Coolbaugh story was the last thing I did before vacation.
Here's the deal. The incident happened at 8:55. We at KLRT found out about around 9:30. I wasn't going to break in with it until I learned we had pictures and we confirmed that Coolbaugh was still unresponsive en route to the hospital. We hit it twice with CK, once during news and again at the top of sports. Afterwards, CK and I stayed around to watch 4, 7 and 11 to see what they had. Quick rundown:
4: Had a phoner with their assignment editor. Aaron told me they saw what we did and decided to do the same.
7: Sully hit it off the top of sports.
11: Was a joke. Repeat, a joke. Their sports guy didn't even lead with Travs, and played the highlights before mentioning that "a coach" was struck by a ball and the game was called off.
Afterwards, CK and I went out to interview Travs players and get VO of the Drillers leaving Dickey-Stephens. Aaron with 4 was the only one to join us. Our anchor stayed at the station, constantly updating the web when we got info. When we got back, CK did a brief standup for the web.
Look, you can bad mouth us all you want. But 4 was the only station to come close to what we did, and I respect the hard work Aaron put in to get the job done. Fact is, we have owned nearly every breaking news story on the weekend, and while you continue to rag on KLRT, we'll continue to own the weekend stories. One day this stupid market will be metered instead of diaries, and then everyone will see the results. Until then, we'll be the annoying loud little guy. ;-)

the fox producer is right on the money. they do seem to break all the news on the weekends and have there pulse on the market!
